Shoaib Malik, Is it beginning of a new Era for Pakistan Cricket.

Cricket is my passion and as an ardent follower of cricket around the world especially my team Pakistan I am writing my views on the recently formed tides after the world cup debacle.

Yesterday it was finally announced that young and gutsy Shoaib Malik would be the next captain of the Pakistan team. This is certainly a bold step taken by the board because Pakistanis have a history of not accepting a younger captain. But as a matter of fact I think it would mark a great move and Pakistan Cricket team will enter a new level InshaAllah.

There are a few things that the cricket board has to understand and discourage among the players. Malik has been made captain and in addition to this also hangs a sword over his head by announcing the evaluation on series to series basis. In simple words they are planning to change him with someone else if he doesn't do well. I think if it happens as I fear it would be a very unfortunate step for the development of cricket in Pakistan. Everybody is busy quoting that we are following the steps of South African Cricket who made G Smith the captain after their really disappointing performance in the WC2003, and say that because of that decision the South African team climbed to No. 1 in the ranking. I strongly disagree with these people because most of them clearly forgets one main point which was the basis on which South African team became successful. They dont even remember what happened soon after Smith was made captain. The South African team performance was declined to their worst and their ODI ranking slipped to their worst. There was also a run of 11 defeats in 12 one-day internationals back in 2004-05. There was no sign of improvement but their cricket board didn't lose confidence and trust on Smith and they bounced back ultimately to become the world beaters.

By saying all this I didn't mean that Pakistan will play like that. I pray for the success of Pakistan team under Malik but we should analyze carefully about all the possibilities. It is indeed a possibility that Pakistan may not start winning straight away. In order to see our team as a world class team we should put trust in Malik. The captain's skills can never be judged by only a couple of chances. He needs trust as well as guidance from the greats of Pakistan cricket and we should groom him to be the another legend in the list of Captains of Pakistan.

I hope that the World Cup debacle would prove to be the turning point for Pakistan Cricket on road to great cricket team. All the best to Shoaib Malik for his yet another role in Pakistan Cricket team.
